What Is Entrepreneurship? The Mindset of a True Entrepreneur#

A lot of people get confused between the terms businessman, startup founder, and entrepreneur.
In this post, I'll clarify these concepts, explore what entrepreneurship really means, and look at what skills and attitudes you need to become a successful founder!

The Difference Between a Businessman, a Startup Founder, and an Entrepreneur:

  • Businessman: Someone who runs a business in an existing market with the goal of generating profit
  • Entrepreneur (Startup Founder): Someone who discovers new opportunities and creates a new business. They pioneer new business models or markets that didn't exist before, creating new value
  • Entrepreneur (with Entrepreneurial Spirit): Going beyond just running a business, this is someone who discovers new value and opportunities, and challenges themselves to realize them through creative and innovative methods. An entrepreneur aims to make a positive impact on the world through continuous innovation and change, rather than chasing short-term profits

Capitalism and the Role of Entrepreneurs:
Capitalism evolves through producing new goods, improving existing product quality, introducing new production methods, and pioneering new markets. At the center of all this is the entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurs are the drivers of innovation who create value and industries that never existed before, through creative destruction.

Core Elements of the Early Startup Process#

For a successful startup, these four elements need to be organically connected:

  1. Discovering startup opportunities
  2. Securing resources
  3. Building a team
  4. The founder's role

In the early startup process, full of uncertainty and risk, the founder's leadership and problem-solving abilities are especially critical.

The Founder's Role#

  • Writing a business plan
Turning ideas into concrete, actionable plans
  • Active communication
Communicating clearly and persuasively with investors, team members, customers, and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrating leadership
Unifying the team, sharing the vision, and providing motivation
  • Creative problem solving
Solving unexpected problems by breaking out of conventional thinking

What Is Entrepreneurship?#

Entrepreneurship goes beyond just a mindset or attitude.
It means creative and proactive action that creates value the world has never seen, through the process of thinking -> executing -> solving problems -> creating value.

Core Elements of Entrepreneurship#

  1. Achievement Drive
The desire to reach high goals. The driving force to keep challenging yourself without fearing failure
  2. Innovation
Introducing ideas and methods that didn't exist before to lead change
  3. Risk Tolerance
Boldly seizing opportunities even in uncertain situations
  4. Proactiveness
Recognizing change on your own, creating opportunities, and preparing for the future

Characteristics of People Full of Entrepreneurship#

  • They find opportunities in problems that others overlook
  • They solve problems innovatively and creatively
  • They take on risk and execute boldly
  • They work autonomously and independently
  • They have a strong drive to achieve their goals
  • They push forward passionately despite lack of funding and resources
  • They don't give up in the face of crises and obstacles -- they push through with persistence
  • They challenge themselves, understanding that opportunity lives within crisis

These are people who have realized that obstacles and opportunities are separated by a razor-thin line.

True entrepreneurship isn't about grand theories or fancy quotes.
It's the process of finding opportunities in the small problems you face every day, taking action yourself, hitting walls, failing, and trying again.

"Stay hungry, stay foolish"
As Steve Jobs said, if you're a founder, you should always crave new things and have the foolish courage to never hesitate before a challenge.

If you have some idea or concern on your mind right now, don't hesitate -- just go for it.
That's exactly where entrepreneurship begins.

Beware of missing chances; otherwise it may be altogether too late some day.
